Revisions, Revisions, and more Revisions

After having to take some personal time to take care of my husband post surgery, I'm finally getting my revisions on Resurrection done.  It helped that while I was taking some time off, my cold readers finished Resurrection and had some very creative and constructive criticisms for me.

There are a few scenes that need to be added to or completely rewritten.  I saw it coming before I passed the book on to the cold readers, but to hear them reaffirm that for me was a big help.  Some of the scenes that I was thinking of revising were great according to them, so I'm going to leave them alone for now.  I'm excited for this novel to get out for everyone else to read it and the cover art is fantastic!

After I finish the revisions for Resurrection, I'm going to start the background notes for Scandal as well as prepare for this year's Nanowrimo novel.  I'm very excited about this year's book and I think I just might end up liking it so much that I'll revise it and put it out there for the public to read.  There will be more on that novel as we get closer to November.

Now it's time to get back to the revisions.  Hopefully I'll have a revised novel ready in the next week.

Beta Readers-Part 2

I love the friends I have that loved Prophecy enough that they want to beta read (or cold read as I will sometimes call it) for me. Even the ones that are upfront enough to tell me that they want to read the finished product, but really don't want to read the novels until they're finished. It's all helpful. As I stare at the second "first" draft of Legacy, I'm starting to wonder if my beta readers know what they're really getting into.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't like to beta read. I'll do it and I'll be honest about the work I'm reading, but I hate to do it. I don't feel like I'm being fair to the author. When your novel is in shambles (that's what a first draft really is after all) and you haven't figured out a title or how you want to chapter it, it's that much harder for me to give you good feedback when I cold read it. I know this and that's why I'm very picky about who cold reads for me.

I have two wonderful friends that got to read Prophecy in it's first draft. They didn't have to tell me how horrible it was (Nikki, we can both be honest here. It was HORRIBLE), they told me it could be better. Neither of them have had a chance to read the published novel (because I can't seem to remember to go to the post office and I won't just send a copy down without my autograph), but I think they'll both be surprised by the final novel. They both have copies of Forbidden (I'm sure you both do because I remember emailing them to you) and it's not the same book now as it was then.

As I sit here staring at Legacy, I wonder if either of them would be surprised by the content of it. I wonder what my other beta readers will think of the story. Sometimes you have to love your beta readers. Sometimes they just scare me.

Beta Readers

Yesterday I talked about editing. Today's post is still part of that process. If you aren't done writing yet, that's okay. You'll need this info eventually.

So you edited your first draft and now you want to know what else you need to fix. This is when you enlist some really good friends or you find a forum and get some help. This is when you get yourself some beta readers.

I'm lucky in that I have friends who like to do this (I think they like to do this. That's what they tell me). The unlucky thing for them is that they have to chain themselves to a computer and read a document that's not chaptered for hours (I'm sorry guys!). If I had the money and the ability to get a manuscript to the people I trust to beta read my work, I would do it. I just don't right now.

Beta readers can be just about anyone. They don't need to have experience in the subject, but they can if you want them to. The point of a beta reader is that you want someone who is outside the story to read it. A beta reader is going to find the gramatical stuff you missed, the spelling errors Word didn't catch, and the holes in your plot that need to be filled in.

I've actually given a first draft to a beta reader (NP I'm sorry about that. I know it was bad) and she was honest enough to tell me the truth. Based on her recommendations, I fixed a lot. Did I listen to all of her suggestions? No. But I listened and I learned. It made it easy to not repeat the same mistakes over and over again in my later works.

Personally, I don't like to beta read. I will do it if someone asks me to, but I don't always like to. Does that mean I won't do it if you ask? No. If you ask me, I'll be more than happy to do so. I read quickly and if you don't hook me in the first two chapters, I'll tell you. But there are people out there who love to do this kind of thing.

Besides, if you've been telling people you're writing a book, I'm sure they want to read it right? Find someone you can trust, someone who won't steal it from you and try to publish it on their own (I've heard horror stories) and let them have it. The only way to find out if it's any good is to let someone read it.
